💠Introduction

What’s up, folks? With so many new legendary skills already out and more on the horizon, it can become difficult to know which skills to prioritize with limited funds. In this article, we’ll take a look at the newest skill that just graced the game, Knife Through Butter, what it does, its role in the meta, and whether it's worth purchasing.

💠Knife Through Butter

Knife Through Butter came with the latest release of Patch 2.8.6. The legendary skill is a passive that can only be equipped on Attack Immortals that occupy the front line. After landing six normal attacks, the immortal will deal 200% Physical Damage to all enemies and has a 60% chance to reduce each target’s energy by 300. The skill is the first of its kind. Besides Leonidas’ Exclusive Artifact ability, there is no other way in the game to reduce energy. With the ever-growing list of ways for back-line immortals to increase their energy regeneration and energy overall, the release of a skill like Knife Through Butter felt long overdue.

💠Energy Depletion and Synergies

Not surprisingly, the most important aspect of Knife Through Butter is the energy reduction. The damage is relatively low and not worth discussing. The condition behind the energy reduction makes Alexander and Hannibal Barca the two prime candidates for this skill. They are the only two immortals with Exclusive Artifacts that can give them 25% more Attack Speed. Additionally, they are the two immortals that can best utilize the Tough Battle specialization, which gives them 30% more Attack Speed. The faster immortal lands the six hits per instance, the more effective the skill is. Before the skill was released, the meta centered around two defensive tanks holding down the front line while a primary damage dealer, aided by a support, carried the fight from the back line. Knife Through Butter opens the meta up for there to be two damage dealers. However, Alexander and Hannibal Barca would be relegated to a secondary damage dealer. Knife Through Butter is a far cry from the possible output their previous combination of skills dealt.

The best skill to equip alongside Knife Through Butter is Wind Rage. It effectively reduces the six-hit condition to four hits since Wind Rage gives the user a 55% chance to trigger a second normal attack per hit. Because Alexander and Barca’s main role will be to attack and deplete as much energy as possible from the enemies, the skill’s damage is weaker than their favorite two skills, Assembly Charge and Cleave, the lack of a need for more damage from a secondary damage dealer, it is more optimal to give him a supporting skill like an aura instead of a damage-oriented skill. In an average of a 45-second battle, Knife Through Butter procs about 20 times or about once every seven seconds per immortal, excluding misses.

Knife Through Butter is capable of delaying the enemy units’ first ultimate by five to eight seconds if you get lucky. That’s immense when it typically takes about eight to ten seconds to cast. That’s nearly a factor of two. With how much damage is in the game due to immortals like Apollo, who has an ultimate that does 750% damage, specializations that increase damage, and supports that amplify damage even further, the first ultimate cast is increasingly important. It also affects skills like Battle Frenzy, Corrosive Power, and Energy Mastery that rely on an immortal using their first ultimate.

In battles against a unit with the skill, your immortals’ ultimate instances are demonstrably fewer. In the left report, in a 47-second battle against Alexander with Knife Through Butter, Loki only had seven procs of his ultimate, whereas in the right report, against a team without the skill, Loki proc’d his ultimate nearly twice as many times in fewer seconds. Obviously, there can be other extenuating circumstances like control effects, the enemy’s Wind Rage luck, and the rate of Confusion, among others, but it’s a good general rule of thumb to expect fewer instances of your immortals’ ultimates.

💠Verdict

Against a team with Knife Through Butter, not having it yourself feels like playing the game with a delay in energy regeneration. It will feel like climbing an impossible wall. If both teams have the skill equipped, it levels the playing field and comes down to which team can get the additional attacks from Wind Rage first. Furthermore, having Knife Through Butter opens up the possibility of so many different team compositions with Alexander and Barca. For those reasons, I strongly maintain a Buy rating for the game’s newest skill.

💠Summary

Knife Through Butter was just released this week and finally gives players a way to deal with the massive number of ways to increase energy in this game. It also gives physical damage dealers another option. The skill opens up different team compositions and makes battles much easier for your team against others who do not have the skill. I believe it’s worth trying to roll for.
