💠Introduction

What’s up, folks? Welcome back to my Illusion Battlefield League(IBL) series, where I take a closer look at different matches. The IBL tournament differs from regular IB in that everyone will construct marches and skill builds using a fixed set of skills. At different stages of the tournament, more immortals and skills will become available. Everyone has access to the same immortals and the same skills. Castle skins and Lord Talents do not affect the more fast-paced battles of IBL. Relocations and marching speed are also faster. The event is one of the most entertaining events in Infinity Kingdom, and players enjoy spectating, almost like a sporting event. In this article, I’m going to take a closer look at the Week Ten Point Phase match between Server 56’s Hakuna Matata(HMB) and Server 231’s CN. CN’s positions in this match will be denoted in green while HMB’s will be in red.

💠Overview

Both alliances are middle-of-the-pack teams that are good enough to beat other mediocre teams, but not good enough to contend against the top 10. CN consists of CN and IMPK, which used to be fairly good several seasons ago when they were in Server 170. Since then, they have been steadily dropping off. Both teams regularly field 30 to 40 players every week. HMB was 5-0 heading into the match, but most of their wins came against teams that had relatively inactive rosters. CN was also 5-0, but their wins were against teams who had more players, and they put up equally as dominating wins. CN should be the favorite to win this match.

💠Starting Positions and Talents

HMB

  • Started with 27 players and ended with 36
  • 12 Attack talents
  • 11 Defense talents
  • 4 Support talents

CN

  • Started with 27 players and ended with 32
  • 17 Attack talents
  • 7 Defense talents
  • 3 Support talents

💠Tower 1

CN sent five players to Tower 1, and HMB relocated seven. For the top-sided team, it’s generally better to send more players to Tower 1 and use their proximity advantage to Tower 4 to block relocations and send fewer players there instead. Both teams positioned themselves around the tower well. CN had better edge spawns, so if they could destroy a couple of relocations, they could easily even up the numbers.

💠Tower 4

CN sent six players to Tower 4, and HMB sent ten. CN should have tried to block some of HMB’s relocations if they were only going to send fewer than eight players. If HMB were against a better team, they would need to give up some of the spots around the tower so they don’t get blocked. CN would still be able to destroy relocations since they would likely arrive sooner. HMB had organized positioning around the tower.

💠Central Tower

CN sent eight players to the Central Tower in a neat and organized formation, hovering over the top and right sides of the tower. HMB sent seven, but their relocations weren’t as compact. One tried to move to CN’s side of the tower so that relocation would inevitably get destroyed. Another was too far forward with no teammates next to him. CN should easily be able to gain control of the area.

💠Altars

CN sent four players to the Moon Altar. HMB didn’t send anyone to either altar.

💠Home Towers

CN stationed one guard at their home tower and HMB chose to leave theirs unprotected.

💠Play-by-Play

At Tower 1, CN destroyed two relocations. They zeroed another two players two minutes later before HMB could even zero one, giving themselves a five-to-four advantage. HMB kept sending reinforcements back to the scene, but they made a crucial mistake. They let an enemy relocate next to them who helped zero another. CN proceeded to zero two more players near the tower before committing to the siege. They captured the tower 12 minutes into the match. CN cleared the remaining HMB players from the area, and then some started moving towards HMB’s home tower.

At Tower 4, CN failed to destroy any relocations despite having the spawn advantage. More HMB latecomers relocated to Tower 4, and HMB had over half of their team in the area. They nearly captured the tower before CN stopped them. HMB zeroed two players next to the tower using rallies and solo attacks before capturing the tower on their second attempt with their support talents a minute later. HMB was never able to clear out the rest of their squad despite having double their numbers at the tower. CN continued to attack Tower 4, and because HMB was losing pound for pound, they couldn’t rotate anyone off the tower.

In the center, CN’s organized formation, coordination, and numbers allowed them to take control of the area early. They surrounded the opposition and sent more players from their spawn. HMB’s poor relocation-destroying skills meant they couldn’t defend well from two sides. By the time the Central Tower became available to siege, there were only three HMB players left, none of whom were near the tower. CN captured the Central Tower uncontested at the 13-minute mark, giving them their third tower of the match.

Meanwhile, seven minutes into the match, CN sent three of their players from the Moon Altar to HMB’s home tower, which was guarded by a lone soldier. HMB should have known to have their players who were in spawn relocate to their Tower 3 by the five or six-minute mark if CN had players at either altar. Instead, they relocated after CN had already stolen the tower a couple of minutes later. CN destroyed one relocation. Before long, it was a full-blown showdown. HMB relocated half of their team to defend and try to oust the seven invaders, but they were losing.

HMB eventually retook Tower 3 at the 24-minute mark, but it took so many players and so much time. HMB tried to respond by having one person attack CN’s home tower and one person attack Tower 1, but there were enough guards and not enough invaders that CN was able to repel the attacks with little effort. CN took the time to hammer away at Tower 4, and HMB was slowly but surely dying. Five minutes later, CN depleted HMB so much that they stole the tower, giving them four towers to HMB’s one. HMB tried to siege the Central Tower to no avail. They were down 34,000 points, and a mere Central Tower was not going to save them.

💠Summary

CN’s Diego was the match MVP as they won with 100,000 points to HMB’s 29,400. HMB’s plan was decent, but the execution was poor. Two mistakes defined their play. Simply garrisoning their teammates’ relocations at Tower 1 would have given them a better shot at it, and they left their home tower too open for attacks in the early game. CN telegraphed their play by relocating to the altar first, and HMB should have seen that invasion coming. CN defended Tower 3 well after stealing it and then took advantage of their diversion to steal Tower 4 to effectively trade the two objectives. Tower 4 is much easier to defend than Tower 3. CN was also a lot more well-versed in rallying and garrisoning, and that made all the difference even when they were at a numbers disadvantage. CN moved to 6-0 and HMB dropped to 5-1 to end the first phase.
