🔷 Part 19: “The Betrayal of Trust”

The cold stillness of Camelot's dungeon was disrupted by a sudden ripple of magic that sent shivers down Arthur and Morgana's spines. From the shadows, a figure emerged—Merlin, his piercing gaze cutting through the gloom.

"Merlin," Arthur said, startled. "You’ve come."

"Indeed," Merlin replied, his voice calm but heavy with judgment. "I had to see for myself what you’ve become—and what you plan to do if freed."

Morgana straightened in her chains, her voice laced with desperation. "Merlin, you know us. We’ve made mistakes, but Camelot needs us. Help us escape, and we’ll restore what was lost."

Merlin’s eyes narrowed. "Restore it to what? Tyranny cloaked in order? Fear masquerading as loyalty? Tell me, Arthur, Morgana—what are your plans if I free you?"

Arthur glanced at Morgana, their unspoken bond communicating more than words ever could. They knew the truth of their intentions would shatter any chance of Merlin’s help. So, with carefully measured words, Arthur began.

"We’ve learned from our failures," he said, his voice steady but earnest. "If we escape, we will seek to unite Camelot—not through fear, but through justice and understanding. We want to repair the damage we caused, to make amends."

Morgana nodded, her tone soft yet pleading. "We’ve lost everything, Merlin. Give us this chance to make it right. Let us prove we can be better."

Merlin studied them, his expression unreadable. The silence that followed was thick with tension. Finally, he spoke, his tone as sharp as a blade. "If I believed for a moment that you hadn’t changed, I wouldn’t even consider this. But I see the spark of sincerity—or perhaps desperation—in your eyes." He paused, his lips tightening. "I will help you escape. But know this: if you betray the trust I am placing in you, there will be no place in this world where my magic will not find you."

Arthur and Morgana exchanged fleeting looks of relief, disguising their triumph with gratitude. "Thank you, Merlin," Arthur said, bowing his head. "We won’t let you down."

Merlin stepped back into the shadows, his voice echoing as he spoke his final words before departing. "At dawn, the path will be clear. Don’t waste this chance."

True to his word, the next morning, the dungeon began to stir with subtle changes. The air grew damp, and faint streams of water trickled along the stone floor, leading toward the exit. The guards patrolling the halls seemed distracted, their movements sluggish as though caught in an unseen current.

Arthur and Morgana followed the trail, their chains mysteriously broken, their path guided by illusions that distorted the guards' perceptions. Doors appeared where none existed, and walls seemed to vanish into mist. The magic was unmistakably Merlin’s, each trap and misdirection weaving a seamless escape route.

As they emerged into the dense forest beyond Camelot’s walls, the sound of the castle faded into the distance. For the first time in weeks, they were free. Morgana turned to Arthur, her eyes alight with a mixture of relief and determination.

"We did it," she whispered.

Arthur nodded, his jaw set. "Merlin believes we’ve changed, and that belief gave us this chance. We won’t squander it—but neither will we let his naivety stop us."

Morgana smirked. "No. Together, we will reclaim Camelot. And this time, no one—not even Merlin—will stand in our way."

As they disappeared into the forest, the faint traces of water magic lingered behind them, a testament to the trust they had deceived and the justice they would soon defy.

Arthur's life is now on the run after he has consistently chosen the path of darkness and deception. After deceiving his own friend, Merlin and potentially getting him in trouble for their actions. They have always been on a devious path, and we can expect nothing less from them at this point.
