🔷 Introduction

Welcome to part 18 of my King Arthur series, where we are following King Arthur's magical journey that has taken a nontraditional path. There is forbidden magic, betrayal, and a dark path that Arthur has opted for. Follow along to see what he will choose to do next!

📄 Recap of Part 17: Civil War in Camelot

Arthur's descent into tyranny fueled a devastating rebellion, turning his kingdom into a battlefield of despair. The heroes, caught between loyalty and justice, faced an agonizing choice—stand with the people or confront the king to save Camelot from ruin.

🔷 Part 18: “Whispers in Shadows”

The cold of Camelot’s dungeon crept through the stone walls like an unwelcome specter, settling heavily in the cells where Arthur and Morgana were confined. Each was shackled in place, bound not just by iron but by ancient magic that silenced their powers and left them mere shadows of their formidable selves. Between them, a wall of thick stone loomed, muffling their voices yet not silencing them entirely.

“Morgana,” Arthur’s voice, hoarse from days of confinement, broke the stillness. “Can you hear me?”

There was a pause before her reply, sharp and tinged with defiance. “Of course, Arthur. I’m imprisoned, not deaf.”

A bitter chuckle escaped his lips. “Even in chains, you never fail to remind me who commands the sharpest tongue.”

Morgana sighed, her tone softening. “Is this what it’s come to? Trapped in the dark, stripped of power, while those who betrayed us play rulers above?”

“They didn’t betray us,” Arthur spat. “They turned my people against me. Against us.” His voice cracked with frustration. “I did what I had to. You saw the rebellion. You saw their defiance.”

“I saw fear,” Morgana admitted. “Fear in their eyes—of you, of me, of what we had become.” She shifted in her chains, the clinking sound echoing through the chamber. “But that fear was our shield, Arthur. Fear keeps a kingdom in line when loyalty falters.”

A tense silence followed before Arthur spoke again, his tone quieter but no less resolute. “Was I wrong, Morgana? Did I push too far?”

Her voice softened with an unexpected tenderness. “Perhaps we both did. But right or wrong doesn’t matter anymore. We are here now—together. And if we are to survive this, if we are to reclaim what’s ours, regret has no place.”

Arthur leaned back against the damp wall, closing his eyes. “They think they’ve defeated us, Morgana. That Camelot will be better without us. But they’re fools if they believe peace will hold without order.” His jaw tightened. “We will rise again, and when we do, no one will dare challenge us.”

Morgana’s laugh was dark and filled with determination. “Now you’re speaking my language, brother.”

For a moment, neither spoke. The weight of shared ambition hung heavy between them. When Morgana finally spoke again, her voice carried a rare vulnerability. “You know, through all of this madness, one thing has never wavered.”

“What’s that?” Arthur asked, though a part of him already knew.

“My loyalty to you,” she confessed. “Even when we were at odds, when you doubted me, I never stopped fighting for us, for Camelot. I never stopped caring.”

Arthur’s breath caught in his throat. “I know,” he murmured. “And I’ve been a fool for letting my pride blind me to that. You’ve always stood by me, Morgana. Always.” His voice grew rough with emotion. “I’ve fought wars, faced betrayal, and ruled a kingdom—but I never admitted what I should have long ago.”

“Say it,” she urged, a hint of challenge in her tone.

“I love you, Morgana,” Arthur said, the words raw and sincere. “Not just as my sister, but as the one person who understands the weight of the crown.”

“I love you too, Arthur,” she whispered fiercely. “And together, we will break free from this prison and take back Camelot. When we do, we’ll rule with such force that no one will dare rise against us again.”

Arthur’s eyes gleamed in the dim light. “No rebellion. No dissent. Only loyalty and order.”

“Exactly,” Morgana vowed. “They will kneel before us or be crushed beneath our reign.”

Their hearts burned with renewed purpose, the bonds of magic and iron forgotten in the face of their shared determination. The dungeon no longer felt like a prison—it became the crucible from which their reign would be reborn. And when they emerged, Camelot would tremble beneath the weight of their united will.

📄 Recap Questions

Will Arthurs and Morgana be able to escape the dungeon that they have used to keep others prisoner so many times before them?

What does a future under their rule look like after such a failure their first time around?

🔷 Conclusion

King Arthur has been through so much darkness, and even in the literal darkness of the dungeon, he still chooses his dark lover and the path of darkness. They want to rule with an even more furious fist than before, which doesn’t feel like the right choice. Their future is in the hands of Wukong and company.
