Please read Wukong's path 23 directly after this if you want to keep all storylines in order!

📄 Recap of Part 16: The Shifting Veil: Trust in Camelot

Arthur tasks four heroes with visiting neighboring villages to assess how the people are coping with the rise of magic and shifting power dynamics, aiming to address their fears and build trust in Camelot's leadership. As the heroes gather insights, they realize their mission is not just to observe but to bridge the divide between a fearful populace and a kingdom on the cusp of transformation.

🔷 Part 17: “Civil War in Camelot”

The morning after the heroes left Camelot, Arthur sat alone in the throne room, his mind racing with doubt. The reassurances from Wukong and the others lingered in his thoughts, but instead of comfort, they filled him with unease. Their words had been too carefully chosen, their tone too measured. He felt as though he had been handed a polished stone while the cracks lay hidden beneath its surface. His paranoia took root, whispering that rebellion was not a question of if, but when.

Summoning his council, Arthur stood before them with a grim determination. “The kingdom teeters on the edge of chaos,” he declared, his voice sharp with authority. “The people’s hearts are divided, and I will not allow dissent to fester. They must be shown strength. Fear must be extinguished before it consumes us.” The council exchanged uneasy glances, but none dared openly defy him. “From this day forward,” Arthur continued, “curfews will be imposed on all villages. Gatherings will be restricted to essential purposes. Magic performed without express approval will be punished severely, and any who speak against Camelot will face imprisonment—or worse.”

Sir Gawain stepped forward, his voice cautious. “Your Majesty, with respect, these measures might incite the very unrest you seek to prevent.” But Arthur’s eyes burned with resolve. “No,” he said, his tone brooking no dissent. “These measures will show them that Camelot is strong and that their king does not waver.”

As the decrees spread through the kingdom, the fragile trust of Camelot’s people crumbled. Villagers who had been cautiously hopeful about the rise of magic now felt betrayed, their lives upended by sudden restrictions. Non-magic users who had been neutral or curious now viewed magic with fear and resentment. In towns and villages, whispers of rebellion grew louder, fueled by stories of injustice and abuse. What began as quiet discontent erupted into open defiance as communities banded together to resist the crown.

At the gates of Camelot, a vast crowd had gathered, an army of the disenfranchised. Farmers wielded pitchforks and axes, blacksmiths carried hammers, and former knights, disillusioned by Arthur’s tyranny, led the charge. They carried banners that read “Freedom from Tyranny” and “For the People.” Their voices thundered with rage and desperation, echoing across the fields.

Arthur stood atop the battlements, his armor gleaming in the sunlight. His face was hard as stone, but his eyes betrayed the turmoil within. “Traitors,” he muttered under his breath, gripping the parapet so tightly his knuckles turned white. Morgana stood beside him, her expression unreadable. “Arthur, these are your people,” she said softly. “They need to be heard, not silenced. If you push them any further, you’ll destroy everything you’ve built.”

“They’ve already made their choice,” Arthur snapped. “They’ve turned their backs on Camelot, on me. Sound the horns. Let them see the price of rebellion.” Morgana’s lips tightened, but she said no more. The horns blared, and the gates of Camelot creaked open as Arthur’s army marched out to meet the rebels. Soldiers armed with steel clashed against villagers armed with desperation. Magic users among Arthur’s forces unleashed fire and lightning, their spells wreaking havoc on the battlefield. But the rebels, though untrained, fought with unyielding resolve, using the terrain and their sheer numbers to counter the magical onslaught.

Amid the chaos, the four heroes arrived, their journey complete but their mission far from over. They stood on a hill overlooking the battlefield, horror etched into their faces. “This is madness,” Seondeok said, her voice barely above a whisper. “We wanted change, not... this.”

“This war is the result of Arthur’s fear,” Hippolyta said grimly, drawing her sword. “If we don’t act now, there won’t be a kingdom left to save.”

“We need to stop this,” Wukong added, his eyes fixed on the figure of Arthur, still commanding from his horse. “The king is the key. If we can confront him, maybe we can end this without more bloodshed.”

The group plunged into the fray, fighting their way through soldiers and rebels alike. They saw the devastation firsthand—fields turned to ash, families torn apart, and the ground soaked in blood. Magic crackled in the air, its power unchecked and destructive. At the heart of the chaos, they reached Arthur, who sat astride his steed, barking orders with wild eyes.

“Arthur!” Wukong called, his voice cutting through the din of battle. The king turned, his face a mask of rage and suspicion. “You!” Arthur spat. “You’ve returned to mock me? To side with these traitors?”

“We’re here to stop this madness!” Hippolyta shouted. “Your people are dying, Arthur. Camelot is tearing itself apart.”

Arthur’s gaze flicked between them, his paranoia flaring. “You’ve betrayed me,” he said, his voice trembling with fury. “You’ve brought this rebellion to my gates. You—”

“No!” Seondeok interrupted, stepping forward. “You did this, Arthur. Your fear, your distrust—it’s poisoned everything. Your people needed a leader, and you gave them a tyrant.”

Arthur’s hand moved to his sword, his face twisted with anger and pain. “I’ve done what I must to protect Camelot,” he said, his voice shaking. “Everything I’ve done has been for the good of this kingdom.”

Wukong stepped closer, his tone calm but firm. “Then prove it. End this war. Speak to your people. Show them the king they believed in—the king who could unite, not divide.”

For a moment, Arthur hesitated. His eyes flickered with doubt, the weight of the battle and the devastation surrounding him pressing down. But before he could respond, a deafening explosion of magic erupted nearby, sending shockwaves through the battlefield. The rebels surged forward, their desperation overcoming their fear, and the fighting grew fiercer.

Arthur’s resolve hardened once more. “It’s too late for peace,” he said coldly. “The only way to save Camelot is to crush this rebellion.”

As he turned back to the battlefield, the heroes realized the truth: Arthur was beyond persuasion. If Camelot was to be saved, they would have to make an impossible choice—to stand with the people against the king or to let the kingdom fall into ruin under Arthur’s rule. The weight of that choice pressed down on them as the battle raged on, the fate of Camelot hanging by a thread.
