🔷 Introduction
Welcome to part 13 of my King Arthur series, where we are following King Arthur's magical journey that has taken a nontraditional path. There is forbidden magic, betrayal, and a dark path that Arthur has opted for. Follow along to see what he will choose to do next!
📄 Recap of Part 12: “The Wizard of Reason”
Arthur, now ruler of Camelot, seeks to reshape the kingdom by embracing magic and establishing a new order where power and freedom are respected. When Merlin challenges his approach, urging the importance of balance and wisdom, Arthur agrees to govern magic with laws that protect the innocent. Together with his knights, Arthur sets out to rebuild Camelot, aiming to create a realm where all can thrive, guided by both strength and purpose.
🔷 Part 13: “The Mage Guard of Camelot”
The sun had barely risen over Camelot, casting a golden hue over the city, when the grand announcement echoed through the kingdom. A loud, authoritative voice boomed across the streets, carried by the royal heralds to every corner of the realm. “By the order of King Arthur, a new era has come to Camelot. Magic is no longer feared, nor outlawed, but embraced! If you possess magical abilities and wish to join the future of this kingdom, come to the castle by noon tomorrow. Those who do not believe in this new order, or who oppose the use of magic, are hereby commanded to leave Camelot or face imprisonment. The time for change has come!”
The news spread like wildfire, igniting a wave of both hope and fear throughout the land. Many who had lived in secret for years, concealing their magical gifts out of fear, now felt a flicker of hope. They had long known they were different but had kept their abilities hidden, forced to suppress their power under the oppressive reign of Uther and the laws that forbade magic. For these individuals, the king’s offer was a chance at freedom, a chance to stand tall and claim their rightful place in the world.
Yet, for others, the announcement was a harbinger of chaos. Those who feared magic and the changes it could bring scrambled to leave the city, some fleeing in haste, others with anger in their hearts. The streets grew quieter as more and more citizens packed their belongings and left Camelot behind, unwilling to live in a kingdom ruled by the unknown forces of magic.
As the deadline approached, the streets filled with a mixture of anticipation and trepidation. Those who had stayed behind gathered in silence, waiting for the appointed hour, unsure of what would come next. At noon, as promised, the gates of Camelot opened wide, and one by one, individuals began to enter the castle grounds.
Among them were farmers, merchants, and even a few nobles—all with the same fearful excitement in their eyes. They approached the castle with caution, unsure whether they had truly been called to something grand or whether they had walked into a trap. Some had felt a stirring inside them for years, a magical urge they could neither explain nor control. Now, they were ready to face their destiny, whatever it might hold.
By the time the sun reached its peak, fifteen individuals stood in the grand hall of Camelot, awaiting Arthur’s judgment. The air was thick with the tension of the moment, every eye in the room focused on the king. Arthur, seated upon his throne, looked down upon them with a steady gaze. By his side stood Morgana and Merlin, two of the most powerful figures in the kingdom—one trusted for her knowledge of magic, the other revered for his wisdom.
Arthur’s voice rang out, clear and strong. “You have come seeking a place in this new Camelot. Before I grant you such a place, you must be proven worthy. Morgana, please see if their claims are true.”
Morgana stepped forward, her dark eyes scanning the group. She was the perfect blend of beauty and power, and her presence alone seemed to draw the room into a tense silence. One by one, she approached each person, raising her hand to check their energy. The air around her seemed to pulse with power as she examined their magical signatures. Her face remained impassive, but in her eyes, a flicker of recognition passed each time she confirmed their abilities.
By the time she finished, all fifteen had been tested, and to Arthur’s surprise, each person had the magical gift. Some had the ability to move objects with their minds, while others could manipulate fire or heal wounds with a simple touch. There was a woman who could control the winds and a young man whose magic seemed to resonate with the very earth beneath their feet. They were, as Arthur had hoped, powerful—but with that power came immense responsibility.
Arthur stood and addressed the group, his voice filled with conviction. “You are no longer just citizens of Camelot. From this day forward, you are ‘mage guards,’ a new order that will protect this kingdom with the very power you wield. You will train with Morgana and Merlin daily, learning to harness your abilities and ensure that they are used for the greater good of all. Your status will be above that of the knight’s guard, for your power is far greater and more dangerous. But with this power comes a burden. You must control it, or it will control you.”
The mage guards stood tall, a mixture of pride and fear in their hearts. They had been given a title, a place in this new kingdom, but they also now understood the weight that came with their gifts. They were not just warriors—they were guardians of a future Camelot, where magic would no longer hide in the shadows.
Morgana stepped forward, her voice low but commanding. “You will be trained rigorously. The magic you wield is not just a tool; it is a force. You must learn to bend it to your will and to do so with the utmost discipline. It is not just power you need to master, but yourself.”
Merlin, his eyes calm but intense, added, “Magic is a force of nature. It is wild, unpredictable, and beautiful. But it is not to be used recklessly. You will learn patience, humility, and wisdom as you grow in your abilities.”
With the announcement made, the mage guards were led away to begin their training. They would learn to control their gifts, to respect their power, and to use it wisely for the protection of Camelot.
The news of this new order quickly spread beyond the city, and while some rejoiced, others feared the unknown consequences of such a bold experiment. Yet, for those who had long kept their magic hidden, Camelot had become a beacon of hope—a place where they could finally step into the light, their power no longer a secret but a force to be reckoned with.
As Arthur watched them leave, he could not help but wonder: Had he made the right choice? Would this new Camelot, built upon magic and strength, bring the unity and peace he had hoped for—or would it open the gates to something darker? The future was uncertain, but one thing was clear: Camelot had changed forever.
📄 Recap Questions
What are Arthur's intentions with the new mage guard, and how does he plan to use them?
Is all of this for the better of Camelot, or is it all part of a selfish game he has been planning with Morgana?
🔷 Conclusion
Finally we have seen Arthur soften his outlook on Camelot, at least that he has not harmed anyone or devised anything dark and evil. But judgment on that will have to come in the future, as we are still unsure of his intentions with the magic guard and what their purpose is. To keep the city safe or for some other darker purpose. Either way, it's good to see Arthur on his rightful throne, even if it has caused a little chaos.
See you next week!
