Hello everyone and welcome back to my ongoing series delving into the various immortals in the game. Today, we will be taking a look at the newest Chaos immortal, Anubis. After teasing his introduction for months in Open Arena, he has finally become available for players to obtain.

Anubis is an Egyptian god of funerary culture and practices, and the care of the dead. Represented in the form of a man with a jackal head, he was considered lord of the dead in Egyptian history, and later on became the “conductor of souls” in the Greco-Roman world, with a different name Hermanubis (together with Hermes). Anubis is the newest Chaos immortal who was just released this weekend. He is a Shieldmen and is a Defense based immortal. In this Immortal Insights article, we shall delve into the various components of Anubis’ skills and build, and come up with our preliminary conclusion for this new immortal.

Obtaining the Immortal

Just like the rest of the chaos immortals, Anubis and his exclusive artefact, Balance of Judgement, can only be obtained through the Chaos Roulette. Those who want to max him out this weekend will have to spend more than 4000 eyes, while those who want to max his artefact will have to spend more than 6000. Even with the steep price tag, he has shown early potential, and might be well worth the cost.

Ultimate Skill Breakdown

Even though Anubis is a defensive immortal, his skill, Deadly Sandstorm, allows him to convert his physical defence into physical attack. While not quite as strong as Poseidon, he has much more health, and is still able to do a lot of damage to enemy immortals. He is also able to increase the damage taken by all enemies, which could help to combat the problem of timing out by hitting the time limit of 90 seconds. His bleed effect would also make him a good partner for Loki, increasing the chance of Loki Confusing enemy immortals.

His exclusive artefact : Balance of Judgement, increases the additional damage taken by the enemy. While 10% additional damage does not sound like much, it could be the difference maker between successfully attacking an enemy, or forcing a time out while the enemy has a sliver of health left.

Potential Skill Builds

One possible way to build Anubis is with skills similar to Athena currently. With Guard, he will be able to protect the main damage immortal, who could be Poseidon or Manco. With Anubis being a controversial defence immortal where his skill and exclusive artefact are focused on converting defence into attack, the team will have significant less defence compared to selecting Athena as the defence immortal. But at the same time, it will also be able to deal more damage than an Athena combination march. This will be very helpful in preventing the battle from timing out, making it much more difficult to successfully defend against players with Anubis.

Anubis could also be built as the main damage dealer instead of positioning him as a defensive immortal. With his high defensive stats that can be converted to attack at the unleashing of his ultimate skill, plus pairing him with Athena to protect him, it will be a very difficult team to beat. While such a combination might see struggle defeating enemies within the time limit, it will be much stronger on defence.

Battle Reports

Since Anubis does more damage based on his physical defence stats, Attack & Defence is a great skill for him, being able to boost both his defence and attack at the same time. Combined with Demonic Contract and Battle Stance, he is able to do a large amount of damage.

However, as mentioned above, if he is the only damage dealer OR the main damage dealer, his damage may be insufficient to break through most strong earth or holy teams. As such, I see him flourishing more as a secondary damage dealer, supplementing the damage from another immortal. Pick another immortal to be the main damage dealer, and Anubis can act as the secondary damage dealer with an extremely strong defence.

Epilogue

As with any new immortal, the introduction of Anubis comes with much excitement and anticipation as players strive to improve their current teams. With what we have seen above in the analysis of his ultimate skill in preliminary testing battle reports, I do not see him replacing Athena or Poseidon anytime soon. While Anubis is able to contribute both on offence and defence, he is not necessarily better than them at either component. Most likely, he will be a good addition to a secondary Earth or Shadow team, where his versatility will shine.
