🛡️Introduction

It has been a few seasons since the 3-role system was introduced for KvK, yet the debate over player roles is far from settled. Players are still caught up in asking the wrong questions: Which role is the best? Which is the easiest? Which is the hardest?

The reality is that every role serves as a crucial piece of the larger strategic puzzle. However, they are far from equal in terms of workload and pressure. Let’s break down each role to examine what it actually takes to play them and determine which one carries the heaviest burden on the battlefield.

🛡️Legion of Frostborne: "The Mythical Story"

Long before time began, the sole God created the universe, eventually leaving its governance to two pantheons: the Léger, rulers of light, and the Noir, masters of darkness. For countless ages, both lived in peaceful balance. That harmony shattered with the emergence of Gullveig, a Noir deity who sought to end the light’s dominance and establish darkness as the supreme force.

Defying the Léger, Gullveig survived their fierce attacks and escaped imprisonment. Years later, when the Three Goddesses of Norheim were tasked with forging a new realm, Gullveig resurfaced to claim the region's primordial power for her crusade. The resulting battle nearly tore the newborn realm apart.

To prevent total collapse, the Goddesses spent their life energy creating Energy Stones to stabilize the continent. Unable to kill Gullveig, they used the remainder of their power to trap her in the far north, entombing the region in eternal ice. Known as the Frozen Realms, this desolate territory remains the coldest land in Norheim and the hiding place of an ancient, lingering threat.

With the introduction of roles for alliance members, we took the next step towards the magical journey of this frozen land.

🛡️What are the roles:

Across the frozen expanses of the Frostborne map, KvK has evolved into something deeper than a standard war of attrition. The battlefield is now governed by specialized playstyles where resource producers, siege architects, and frontline commanders each view the ice through a radically different lens.

At the core of this system are three distinct roles: the Master Craftsman, the Alchemist, and the Fighting Master. Each carries its own progression curve, turning individual player progression into a direct cog in the alliance’s war machine. Mismanage these roles, and your frontline collapses from a lack of logistics; optimize them, and you control the pace of the map.

To evaluate what makes this system work and where alliances frequently fail, we first need to explore how each role functions on the ground.

♟️Alchemist

Let’s start with the role that steals the spotlight every single match: The Alchemist. A total of 30 Alchemists who work for the alliance and whether you’re cracking open a city as well as gate or raining field damage on enemy lines while driving pesky opponents crazy with tactical long-range heat, Alchemists control the battlefield’s rhythm. They turn map positioning into a nightmare for the opposition with their laser phew phews.

But that power comes with a gruelling progression curve. To hit peak efficiency and unlock Level 3 Altar Stones, an Alchemist has to power through 27 distinct talent nodes that translates to a consumption of: 81 million Gold per player (at 3 million Gold per node).

It’s a relentless grind, but when those Level 3 Altars lock into place on the ice, every single piece of Gold spent proves its worth.

♟️Craftsman

If Alchemists get to put on the show, Master Craftsmen build the stage. Occupying 60 slots (double that of the Alchemists), Craftsmen are the operational engine driving the entire alliance campaign.

What makes this role so attractive is its efficiency. While the full tree contains 23 nodes which amounts to 69M gold (again 3M gold per level), you unlock max utility for your alliance at Node 18 with Level 3 Material Transmutation. Even better, the inital node rewards the player with a massive 50% boost to gathering speed (at level 5). This makes the Craftsman role perfect for players who want a more relaxed KvK experience, allowing you to farm efficiently, upgrade their own castle, and generate essential siege materials simultaneously.

However, "relaxed" doesn't mean irrelevant. Alchemists literally cannot deploy their game-changing Altar Stones without the refined materials Craftsmen supply. Seamless communication between these two roles is what turns raw resources into map control thus making the Craftsman the unsung hero behind every major victory.

♟️Fighting Master

Yes, every lord in the Frostborne can send marches across the ice. But Fighting Masters are built for the snow, the blood, and the brutal grind of constant war. They are the apex combatants of KvK, designed to operate as terrifying solo duellists on the open field and unstoppable forces when rallied together under a unified command.

As the largest division in any alliance that is filling up to 90 individual slots, the Fighting Masters carry the military weight of the campaign. To reach peak operational power, a player must push through a grueling 35 talent nodes. With each node demanding 3 million Contract Gold, the total entry fee for a fully realized frontline terror reaches 105 million Gold. It is the deepest resource sink in the Lord Contract system, reflecting the pure offensive and defensive stats packed into their talent tree.

What makes the Fighting Master unique is that "maximum potential" depends entirely on your operational goals. The progression curve is continuous, meaning every point spent yields direct combat dividends.

  1. The Independent Striker (Node 30): If you are a lone-wolf player who prefers picking off scattered marches, raiding resource nodes, or fighting outside primary alliance rally windows, stopping at Node 30 offers a sweet spot of power without forcing you into the final, most expensive grind.
  2. The Alliance Vanguard (Node 35): If your goal is to lead city breaches, anchor critical gate defences, or trade blows with the enemy’s strongest players, nothing short of Node 35 will suffice. On high-stakes battlefields, missing those final five nodes means leaving vital combat stats on the table.

Because the game automatically assigns any unspecialized player to the Fighting Master role, its progression curve is kept simple and direct and free of complex resource-transmutation or structure-placement mechanics.

🛡️The Tasks:

Progressing through any Lord Contract tree relies on a straightforward conversion mechanic: completing seasonal tasks yields Node Advancement Tokens, with each completed task awarding 2 Tokens (where 1 Token advances 1 Node).

Because total node requirements vary by role, the operational workload to hit peak capability differs significantly across the three specializations:

  1. Alchemist (27 Nodes Total): Requires completing 14 tasks (yielding 28 potential node unlocks, fully covering the 27-node tree).
  2. Master Craftsman (23 Nodes Total / 18 Target): Requires 12 tasks to max the entire tree. However, players focusing strictly on supporting Alchemists only need to complete 9 tasks to reach Node 18 (Level 3 Material Transmutation).
  3. Fighting Master (35 Nodes Total): Demands the heaviest workload, requiring 18 tasks to fully unlock all 35 nodes for max combat efficiency.

To make this progression manageable, tasks fall into two categories. Role-Specific Tasks reward you for executing your specialized duties on the ice, while Universal Tasks offer quick, easily achievable wins the moment KvK opens. Clearing these common objectives right at the start provides an instant injection of tokens, allowing alliances to establish their operational foundation without delay.

♟️Alchemist

♟️Craftsman

♟️Fighting Master

To maximize your token output on Day 1, knock out these straightforward, accessible common tasks first:

  1. Individual Tasks (Solo Grinds):
  2. Sudden Attack & Into the Blizzard (Map/PvE activity)
  3. Healing Madness, Safety First, & Resource Expert (Sustain and resource management)
  4. Alliance Tasks (Group Coordination):
  5. Farming & Infrastructure: Civil Engineer, Troop Maniac
  6. City & Siege Pushes: Peace Breaker, Bulldozers, Take 'em
  7. Combat Operations: Legendary Merit, Demolition Expert

🛡️Alchemists are tough!!

Having played through multiple KvK seasons across all three roles and managing alliance operations from the top, I can say without hesitation: the Alchemist is the toughest job on the battlefield.

While Alchemists are undoubtedly the stars of the show, that stardom comes at a high price. You are only as good as the Master Craftsmen supplying your materials and the Fighting Masters keeping your perimeter safe. Everyone on the ice fights, but not everyone wants to be tied to complex logistics. On paper, placing Altar Stones looks simply: you craft them, alliance officers deploy them, and you sit back to watch the destruction unfold.

In practice, it is anything but sunshine and rainbows.

♟️Structural Friction and Placement Constraints

An alliance is hard capped at a total of 30 deployed Altar Stones across all levels. Because officers cannot cancel or drop an Altar mid-production, Alchemists are locked into unpredictable workflows. There is zero room for error, forcing players to be online and precise with their timing.

♟️High-Bar Task Dependencies

Clearing an Alchemist's personal task path is arguably the most frustrating progression track in the game:

  • Zone Reliance: The initial four tasks are strictly ring-dependent, meaning your alliance must be strong enough to breach regional walls before you can even begin progressing.

  • Auto-Deployment Penalties: Officers cannot selectively choose whose Altar to drop in that specific level. That is chosen by the gameplay mechanics where the highest tier Altar available is automatically deployed. This mechanic makes specific tasks like Prosperity Terminator, Siege Artist, and Silent Execution exceptionally difficult to target and finish.

♟️The Interdependent Web

Playing Alchemist at a high level requires absolute synergy, not just with Craftsmen, but among the 30 Alchemists themselves. High-tier coordination is not just helpful—it is mandatory.

This is why placing alt accounts, farms, or low-activity players in the Alchemist role is a recipe for disaster. If an Alchemist lacks the individual strength or activity to clear tasks, their personal node progression stalls, directly bottlenecking the entire alliance's territorial reach.

Alchemists may carry the glory of map control, but as the old saying goes "Heavy is the head that wears the crown".

🛡️Order of difficulty

Based on my personal experience and opinions of others I would simply put them in the order:

When you pull back the curtain on the Lord Contract system, a clear dynamic emerges:

The Alchemists: The intense friction, high stakes, and sheer unpredictability of Altar deployment turn this 30-player group into a true brotherhood. You aren't just managing altar stones; you are coordinating real-time map control under relentless pressure.

The Fighting Masters: Positioned at the tip of the spear, Fighting Masters are the frontline cavalry holding the boundary line. Their progression path is linear and direct, but don't mistake simplicity for ease the sheer volume of required nodes makes this a gruelling effort that earns them a solid second place in operational importance.

The Master Craftsmen: As the gatherers and transmuters feeding the war machine, Craftsmen supply the materials for every push. They are essential building blocks, but their low-friction progression offers a strategic advantage: if your alliance runs short on main accounts, dedicated alts and farm accounts can step in and run the logistics smoothly.

🛡️Verdict

Ultimately, the role you choose in KvK comes down to your preferred playstyle and availability.

While I thoroughly enjoy playing across all three specializations, there is always room for quality-of-life improvements. For instance, requiring Alchemists and Craftsmen to manually trigger the final completion button on Altar Stones adds unnecessary friction. Automating that handoff upon completion would relieve immense operational pressure from alliance leadership and players alike.

Nevertheless, this triad: Soul (Alchemists), Blade (Fighting Masters) and Foundation (Master Craftsmen) represents the new cornerstone of KvK gameplay and it is undoubtedly here to stay.

As seasonal meta evolves, alliances will continue developing clever, innovative strategies to push these roles to their absolute limit.
