💠Introduction

What’s up, folks? Welcome to this month’s edition of Winners and Losers for Patch 2.8.9. Patch 2.8.9 will be released on Thursday, November 13. Aside from the Legendary Season change, the patch also contains a new immortal, a new skill, balance changes, and several optimizations. Let’s take a look at what the patch entails, discuss the most important changes, the winners and losers of each change, as well as how the changes might affect new and seasoned players.

💠Table of Contents

  • Medusa
  • Divine Blessing
  • Optimizations
  • Summary

💠Medusa

Medusa is the next Chaos immortal addition to the game. She is a ranged attacker whose skill, Gaze of Silence, passively hits all enemies every 6 seconds for 500% physical damage and deals 30% more to targets with Mark of Revenge. The active effect cleanses her debuffs, then attempts to petrify all enemies for 3 seconds at a 50% chance, applying Mark of Revenge for 3 seconds to those who resisted the petrification. Her exclusive artifact Twin Serpent Bracelet extends Mark of Revenge by 3 seconds. I’m surprised Medusa is a backline attacker, given that we just got Apollo not too long ago. There isn’t enough room for both carries, so Apollo is likely to lose his spot.

Winners: N/A

Losers: Apollo

💠Divine Blessing

Divine Blessing is a new legendary aura from the Tower of Knowledge that reduces ultimate skill damage taken by all allies by 40% from the start of battle. This heavily weakens immortals who rely on ultimates for most of their damage such as Apollo and Poseidon. Mages are affected but less so because a chunk of their output comes from skills like Infinite Firepower. It does not impact immortals like Medusa whose damage is primarily passive. The design clearly complements Medusa and broadly tones down everyone else.

Winners: Medusa

Losers: Every other immortal damage carry

💠Optimizations

There are a few important and game changing optimizations, as well as quality-of-life updates, the patch will bring with it. Firstly, Elemental Domain will have Simulation Challenge Mode that gives each Lord 3 tries per open dungeon to test formations against the boss, plus a daily leaderboard showing the top 10 damage rankings for that dungeon. This change is widely welcomed because no one wants to waste their limited entries on low damage when forging equipment needs so many materials, and it lets players optimize runs to speed up material gathering.

Winners: Everyone

Losers: N/A

Another major change is a buff to The Forge’s gold minting: resource-to-gold conversion is significantly more efficient, and the cost to mint gold before level 50 is substantially reduced. This is widely welcomed because gold demand spiked with C60; dragon levels and immortal upgrades now consume large amounts of gold, and until now only Infernal Assault could reliably keep up. This upgrade helps close that gap and eases the gold crunch across the board.

Winners: Everyone

Losers: N/A

Two welcomed quality-of-life updates are coming. First, you can now remove individual points in Lord Talent trees instead of resetting the entire tree, which saves time and reduces frustration when fixing specific rows. Second, a spending confirmation modal appears when purchasing packs with vouchers, preventing accidental one-click buys and avoiding unnecessary headaches.

Winners: Everyone

Losers: N/A

💠Summary

Patch 2.8.9 is a tight mix of new content and quality-of-life updates. Medusa debuts with control and passive damage, and Divine Blessing reduces ultimate damage to allies. Elemental Domain gets Simulation Mode plus daily top-10 to optimize farming. The Forge mints gold more efficiently, easing the C60 gold crunch.
