This guide reflects the author’s personal experience and the game’s content as it exists at the time of writing. Future updates may alter features or introduce new content.

1. Introduction

Crossing the North is a relatively new and spontaneous event that lasts 4 days, with 1 extra day for reward collection only, similar to the Angler’s Feast.

However, unlike Angler’s Feast, which consistently appears at the end of each month, Crossing the North doesn’t follow a fixed schedule. It seems to only come up on special occasions, such as Christmas or Seasonal Celebrations, making it more aligned with Return to Westeros (R2W) than with the other regular monthly events.

2. Game Modes:

There are three ways to play Crossing the North, each serving a different purpose:

  • Practice Mode: This mode is purely for learning the mechanics of the event. It does not consume resources (Night’s Watch Horn) and doesn’t affect your score average. You’ll likely only use this a few times when first experiencing the event.
  • Normal Mode: The main mode, used for improving your average score. While it still doesn’t consume Night’s Watch Horn and doesn’t grant rewards, it does count toward your score average. More on why this might be important in the tips section at the end.
  • Competitive Mode: The most important mode, as it’s the only one that grants rewards for the shop. This mode consumes Night’s Watch Horns, contributes to your score average, and grants Northern Extreme Ice based on your final score.

*Choosing Your Dragon

The dragon you select here has no impact on gameplay or the success of the race. It’s purely for aesthetic purposes. However, picking a dragon with a distinct color you like might help you track yourself better during the race.

3. Gameplay Mechanics

The game is a simple race with math questions along the way. There are only 15 stages (math questions), after which the race ends. And there are only 5 free races per day, with the option to buy another 5 with Black Diamonds.

  • Controlling Your Flight Path: Guide your dragon by clicking the left or right part of the screen to select the side with the highest score.
  • “Health Management”: Choosing the wrong path will reduce your dragon’s health, aka the score visible on screen. If your health (score) reaches 0, the race ends, and you receive no rewards.
  • Final Ranking Calculation: At the end of the race, an enemy dragon will deal a large amount of damage to your remaining health. Your goal is to have enough health left to survive the final hit. The better your performance during the race, the higher your final score will be.
  • Final Score Rewards: Completing a race flawlessly (max points) grants extra rewards. Achieving this five times per day is important to unlocking the most rewards in the shop, like the 3 Legendary Commander Chests.

4. The Shop

The event shop is surprisingly generous, with some of the best free-to-play rewards in the game. Here’s just a few that make it stand out:

  • Commander Chests: Including Legendary Commander Chests, making this one of the few events that let you unlock Legendary Commanders for F2P.
  • Legendary Tokens (Red Shields): Also very hard to obtain as F2P, making this a huge opportunity for awakening some Legendary Commanders for Rebel Leaders or Tavern buffs.
  • Ancient Dust: Because everyone wants Legendary Badges, and this event helps us get them.
  • Battle Diamonds: More "red" rewards, but this time for Lord Equipment upgrades.
  • SP Medal Selection Packs: Used for Troop Appearances, and possibly the only F2P source for them?

5. Spending real money

For those of you with deep pockets, there's also the option to buy up to 5 extra horns, at the very "affordable" price of 20BD each.

Provided you can get a perfect run that translates into 1600 Northern Extreme Ice for 20BD. For example, buying all 5 extra horns per day could grant up to 8000 Northern Extreme Ice, so 1 Legendary Commander chest for 100BD.

I'm not sure the rewards are actually a bargain for spending BD, but everything adds up if money is not an object.

6. Tips and Tricks

  • Multiplication is usually your friend, almost always better than addition. *Not always :)
  • Divisions are usually your enemy. Try to avoid them.
  • Starting at stage 7, the questions get harder, but the timer also increases from 5 to 8 seconds. When in doubt, follow the crowd.
  • Sometimes both choices have the same result. Don't panic!

●  After a recent update, we can use all 5 attempts in 1 race. This saves a lot of time, especially when doing the event on multiple accounts, but it also increases the risk. It’s basically putting all your eggs in 1 basket.

●  If you’re feeling confident, you can easily play 2 accounts at the same time. If they start the race at the same time, there’s a big chance they’ll be in the same competition, so you don’t need to do a double match, just double-clicking to steer left or right.

●  Even if they don’t make the same competition, it’s not that hard to play 2 different games.

●  Normal Mode affects the Daily and Total Event Rankings.

Even though it doesn’t cost resources or grant rewards, it still helps improve your global score, if you’re going for ranking.

  • If everyone makes the same mistake, you all get max Stage Points and Ranking Points, but nobody gets the 50 bonus points for a perfect score ending with 1550 out of a flawless 1600.
  • Alts and farms can still earn rewards! If you don’t have time to pilot them, just drop them in the race and walk away. With a bit of luck, they can finish without any intervention. Most likely, they won’t get max points, but something for free is always welcome.

7. Final Thoughts

With this level of rewards and the latest update allowing us to do all 5 attempts in 1 race, Crossing the North could easily be the best free-to-play event in the game as of now!
