🚢 It seems that you guys had quite a good catch this time, isn't it?🚢

📕Story Background
Early in the morning, the Florida Police Department convened an emergency meeting. Sheriff Harris presided:
“We have intelligence that a group of terrorists is attempting to smuggle a large shipment of weapons and ammunition into Florida. This poses a serious threat to public safety. We must locate these weapons as quickly as possible.”
After the meeting, officers mobilized immediately. Sheriff Harris himself led a team of 20 officers to Charlotte Harbor—the state’s most vital port and the most likely entry point for the smugglers.
Upon arrival, they began inspecting the few freighters docked at the pier. Despite careful searches, no abnormalities were found. The sea was rough, the ships rocked violently, and some officers became seasick.
Not long after, a fleet of fishing boats returned to port. Once the fishermen unloaded their catch, Harris led his men aboard for inspections.
“Routine check,” Harris explained to the captain. “We’ll need your cooperation.”
The fishermen complied, showing no resistance. The boats reeked of fish, their decks wet and slippery—ordinary working vessels in every respect. The search lasted half an hour, but nothing unusual was uncovered.
Harris stepped off the boat. The moment his boots touched the pier, something struck him as wrong. He paused, replayed the scene in his mind, then turned sharply and ordered his team back aboard. This time, their deeper search uncovered the hidden cache: a massive haul of smuggled weapons and ammunition.
What did Harris notice at that moment, prompting him to return and uncover the contraband?
(This story is absolutely fictional. Any inconsistencies with common sense work for the plot)

Correct Answer: Patrick the insurance salesman
Ellen, as a flight attendant, was highly unlikely to be a smoker, given the strict regulations of her profession. Lyden, as an exemplary kindergarten teacher, would also not be expected to smoke, since teachers—especially those working with children—are subject to strict no-smoking standards.
Patrick, however, was different. As a salesman accustomed to calling on clients at their doors, he almost certainly developed the habit of finishing a cigarette and discarding it outside before entering. The cigarette butts found on the grass in front of the victim’s door matched this behavior perfectly.
Thus, the evidence pointed directly to Patrick.
