🚪 It could be quite dangerous, when your relationships get too complex 🚪

📕Story Background

Inspector Jeffery received a call: a woman had been found dead in her apartment. He rushed to the scene.

The victim lived alone, and the entry door led only to her unit. She lay on the floor with a fruit knife embedded in her chest; a pool of blood had formed beneath her. The medical examiner fixed the time of death at about three hours earlier. A thorough sweep turned up no usable fingerprints. Outside, on the small patch of grass in front of her door, officers found several cigarette butts—the only physical lead.

After interviews, three suspects emerged:

  • Ellen — the victim’s former close friend, a flight attendant. Ellen’s ex-boyfriend had long harbored feelings for the victim; Ellen had resented it and had once threatened the victim.
  • Lyden — the victim’s lover, a well-regarded kindergarten teacher. They frequently met in secret.
  • Patrick — a recently acquainted insurance salesman, a notorious playboy whose advances the victim repeatedly rejected.

Jeffery confirmed that each had motive and opportunity during the relevant window. He paused, replaying in his mind what he’d noticed before he even entered the building—then stepped out of the interview room and said, “The case is cracked. The killer is most likely ….”

Who's the culprit? What did Jeffery rely on to identify the culprit, and his reasoning?

(This story is absolutely fictional. Any inconsistencies with common sense work for the plot)

Correct Answer: Coconut crabs are nocturnal the tracks are fake

The coconut crab is a large, land-dwelling crustacean common in Okinawa and the South Pacific islands. It is nocturnal in nature—spending daylight hours hidden in coastal burrows and only coming out at night to forage.

Therefore, in broad daylight, it would be impossible for a coconut crab to climb a palm tree, cut down a coconut, and cause a fatal accident. What really happened was that the killer struck the victim’s head with a coconut, then fabricated the scene by leaving fake “coconut crab” tracks in the sand.

Because the culprit didn’t understand the habits of coconut crabs, they created a clumsy, almost laughable, staged crime scene.
