🔷 Introduction
Welcome to part six of my Poseidon series. A fabled immortal with a long-standing history both in and out of Infinity Kingdom. I will be diving into his story, softly based in Greek lore but also mixed with the famous Norheim. Showing how he interacts within both spaces.
🔷 Recap of part 5: "The Crown Beneath the Waves”
Whispers from the sea stir unease as dreams of a coral crown spread among mortals and gods, hinting at a voice older than Olympus. Poseidon guides the mortal Lycas into the deep, torn between protecting his realm and discovering whether this ancient presence will test or consume them both.
🔷 Part 6: "Hidden in the Abyss”
The mortal’s hands shook as they neared the crown. Lycas was no hero, no son of Zeus with golden ichor in his veins—just a shipwright who had mended sails and carved timbers. Yet the sea had carried him to this place, and Poseidon had bent the current to keep him safe.
Hidden in the abyss, Poseidon’s trident burned in his grip. He had expected a trial of strength, a beast or a storm, something he could crush with his will. But the silence here pressed against him like the deep itself, heavy and ancient. The crown was not stone or coral alone; it pulsed faintly, as if breathing.
When Lycas’s fingers brushed it, the ocean shuddered. A pulse of sound rolled outward, not thunder, not quake, but a voice threading through the water.
“Not you, Lord of Storms. Not yours. Never yours.”
Poseidon stiffened, the words curling like cold iron around his heart. His power surged instinctively, and the sea raged for miles above—ships tossed, whales fled. Yet here, before the crown, his strength felt muted.
The mortal gasped as his body arched, eyes wide with light. The crown fused to his brow, and when he spoke, it was not his voice.
“Do you remember, Wave-Maker, when the first tide fell? Before Olympus, before Titans, before you?”
Poseidon’s jaw tightened. He did remember, though dimly—stories half-buried beneath his reign. A time when the sea had belonged to nameless things, when even gods did not yet walk upon the earth.
“You are bound,” Poseidon growled. His trident sparked, lighting the dark with blue fire. “The seas are mine. They bend to me.”
Lycas’s borrowed mouth curved in something that was not quite a smile. “They bend because I allow it. I slumbered, and in my sleep, you called yourself king. But dreams end, Lord of Storms.”
The rising current whipped around Poseidon, and for a moment, he feared he might be dragged with it. Yet he forced his power outward, pressing the water still. He would not bow, not here, not to something that spoke through a mortal’s skin.
“You wear a crown that is not earned,” Poseidon said, his voice booming through the abyss. “But this man lives because I guided him. If you would test me, then test me through him. But you will not unmake what is mine.”
For a heartbeat, the abyss trembled. The crown dimmed, and Lycas sagged, the strange light flickering from his eyes. The presence receded, not banished, but watching. Waiting.
Poseidon reached forward, steadying the mortal, though it stung his pride. Gods did not cradle men. Yet the sea had chosen this one, and through him, something older spoke. To strike Lycas down would silence the voice for now—but leave its mystery unsolved.
Instead, Poseidon whispered to the current and carried them both upward. The crown still gleamed faintly, mocking him with its glow, but Lycas breathed, and for the moment, the sea obeyed.
It was no victory, only a pause. The voice was awake, and Poseidon knew it would not slumber again.
📄 Recap Questions
What ancient voice speaks through Lycas, and why does it challenge Poseidon’s claim over the sea?
Why does Poseidon choose to protect Lycas instead of striking him down when the crown binds to him?
🔷 Conclusion
Poseidon has stayed the threat for now, but the presence beneath the waves has stirred from its long sleep. Though the sea still answers to his command, he knows its true master may soon rise to claim it.
See you next week!
