Introduction
Knife Through Butter is a legendary passive skill with one important restriction: it can only be placed on attackers. Released in Patch 2.8.6, it has quickly earned a reputation as one of the most impactful skills introduced in recent months.
What makes it stand out is not raw damage alone, but its ability to disrupt energy flow—a mechanic the game has long been missing. Since energy fuels ultimates, and ultimates decide battles, any tool that interrupts this cycle can redefine the outcome of fights.
Knife Through Butter comes at a moment when the meta has been heavily shaped by hyper-regen strategies. These setups thrive on rapid ultimate rotations, chaining abilities from Immortals like Fu Fei, Theodora, Hippolyta, or Apollo. By breaking that rhythm, this skill promises to shake the foundation of many dominant teams and force players to rethink their strategies.
1. Skill Description
Knife Through Butter is a legendary passive skill with a strict positional limit: it can only be equipped on attackers.
Here’s what it does:
- Trigger condition: After 6 normal attacks.
- Effect: Deals 200% Physical Damage to all enemies.
- Bonus effect: Has a 60% chance to reduce each enemy’s Energy by 300.

This makes it a two-in-one mechanic:
- A burst of AoE physical damage.
- An energy disruption effect that slows down ultimates.
What’s important to note is that the energy drain applies to every enemy Immortal simultaneously. With the 60% chance, the pressure builds fast—especially on high attack-speed setups.
In short: it’s not just about damage, it’s about denying your opponent the very fuel that drives their strongest abilities.
Disclaimer about Legendary Skills:
Unlike standard skills that rely on Soul Crystals, Legendary Skills and Knife Through Butter require Ability Stones for unlocking and upgrading, introducing an added level of exclusivity and dedication.
Here's the breakdown:
- Unlocking Costs: 60 Ability Stones.
- Upgrade Path: Levels 2–8 require 180 Ability Stones, increasing in tiers:
- 5 to 10 to 15 to 20 to 30 to 40 to 60 stones per level.
Total : 240 Ability Stones.

Knife Through Butter is the latest legendary skill and therefore comes with a hefty price tag.

The above chart shows my estimation of the total cost to max a Level 8 Legendary Skill, depending on spending profiles. Whales reach the goal in just two events, spending about USD 4,600 by buying every available package. Moderate spenders stretch the progression over seven events and pay roughly half that amount, around USD 2,400, by mixing medium bundles. Light spenders, on the other hand, take fourteen events and spend "just" under USD 2,000 by focusing mainly on small bundles. The gap isn’t only about money but also about time commitment, with a huge difference between finishing in two events or waiting fourteen.

2. Why Energy Control Matters
Energy in Infinity Kingdom is the lifeblood of battles. It’s what fuels ultimates — and ultimates decide the outcome.
- Every Immortal has a base Energy Regen stat in their attributes.
- This stat determines how many energy points they gain per second.
- Once an Immortal reaches 1,000 energy points, their ultimate skill is triggered.
- This is a universal rule across the game.
For a deeper dive into how Energy Regen works, you can check my dedicated article on the topic here.
Why this matters:
- No energy = no ultimates.
- Delaying an enemy’s ultimate by even a few seconds can completely change the tempo of a fight.

Example ultimates that dominate the meta:
- Apollo: 750% AoE physical damage.
- Theodora: massive team-wide heal.
- Fu Fei: 300% HP recovery + control immunity.

Many hyper-regen setups chain ultimates to overwhelm opponents. Knife Through Butter directly disrupts this cycle:
- Drains energy before it reaches full.
- Delays critical heals, shields and control.
- Creates openings for your team to take down vulnerable enemies.
In practice, shutting down one Fu Fei heal and control immunity or an Apollo nuke often means the difference between winning or being overrun.
Mael’s Opinion: Energy control has always been the missing piece of Infinity Kingdom’s combat. Too many fights were decided by who could spam ultimates faster. Knife Through Butter finally brings balance by giving players a tool to slow that down. In my view, this makes it one of the most strategically important skills ever added to the Tower of Knowledge.
3. Best Candidates for Knife Through Butter
Knife Through Butter is restricted to frontline attackers, which means only a handful of Immortals can truly maximize its potential. The skill requires frequent normal attacks to trigger, making physical bruisers and disruptors the best hosts.
Top Candidates
- Ares: One of the best options in the entire game. His naturally high attack speed ensures Knife Through Butter procs frequently, while his kit already weakens barriers, strips enemy immunity, and adds debuffs. Combined, he becomes both a damage dealer and a control nightmare, making him the ultimate energy disruptor.
- Alexander the Great: A reliable frontliner with high attack frequency. Alexander already thrives in aggressive setups and pairs extremely well with attack speed–boosting skills like Wind Rage. Knife Through Butter simply amplifies his ability to pressure teams early.

- Hannibal: Known for both disruption and speed, Hannibal makes strong use of Knife Through Butter’s dual effect.
- Hippolyta: A hybrid option. While not the fastest attacker, her kit synergizes with energy disruption strategies. With Knife Through Butter, she doubles down on preventing enemies from chaining ultimates.

Mael’s Opinion: For me, Ares is the number one choice. His attack speed, disruptive nature, and sheer synergy with Knife Through Butter make him unmatched. Alexander comes close behind, offering consistency and pressure. Hannibal is strong but slightly less explosive, while Hippolyta remains a niche but effective disruptor.
4. Synergies With Other Skills and Setups
Knife Through Butter shines brightest when paired with mechanics that boost attack frequency and consistency. Since the skill triggers after six normal attacks, anything that speeds up those attacks or increases uptime makes it vastly more reliable.
Core Synergies:
- Wind Rage: Probably the best pairing. Reduces attack intervals, meaning the six-hit threshold is reached faster. With Wind Rage, Knife Through Butter can become a near-constant energy drain machine. (every 4 normal attacks).
- Berserker: Adds bonus attack speed, stacking perfectly with Knife Through Butter’s trigger condition. Particularly lethal on Immortals like Alexander or Ares.
- Assembly Charge: Combining Knife Through Butter with Assembly Charge ensures additional damage while the energy drain handles disruption.

Artifacts boosting attack speed:
- Artifacts with "Rapid" multiply Knife Through Butter’s effectiveness. With enough speed, a proc can be forced every few seconds.

Lord Talents & Specialization:
- Talents such as Meerkat Guardian (Attack speed increase) or energy regen modifiers can fine-tune the build.
- Best Specialization is Knight’s Spirit (+21–70% damage, +9–30% attack speed).

Unique Advantage:
Knife Through Butter stands alone as the only skill that introduces energy disruption and damage. This makes it not just a damage enhancer, but a meta-defining tool that changes battle pacing entirely.
Mael’s Opinion: The best use of Knife Through Butter is a dual-role setup: pair it with Wind Rage and an attack-speed artifact, and suddenly your frontline becomes a clock that delays every enemy ultimate. For me, this is where the skill feels truly broken, because you aren’t just playing damage vs. damage anymore — you’re bending the rhythm of the entire fight. As the damage rate is quite low and this skill turns your frontline attacker more as a enabler than a damage dealer, you might want to equip Wind Rage, Knife Through butter AND a Grace or Aura to further support your main Damage Dealer from the backline.
5. Impact on the Meta
Knife Through Butter is not another damage skill (we've seen how low the damage rate is) but, it actively rewrites how battles unfold. Because ultimates decide fights, delaying or denying them forces a completely new pacing in PvP.
PvP
- Direct Counter to Hyper-Regen Teams: These builds thrive on chaining ultimates from Immortals like Himiko, Apollo, Hippolyta, and Baldwin. Knife Through Butter slows down that engine by stripping away energy before it can stack.
- Delays Critical Ultimates: On average, you can delay enemy ultimates by 5–8 seconds. In Infinity Kingdom terms, that’s the difference between surviving a wipe or losing instantly.
- Tempo Shift: Teams with Knife Through Butter start fights on their terms. Instead of reacting to enemy ultimates, they force opponents into awkward, slowed rotations.
- Rise of Hybrid Teams: Physical + Magical mixes become more viable because magical DPS no longer depends on matching hyper-regen tempo.
Strategic Ripple
- Players who relied heavily on Rage Blessing + Energy Mastery stacks are forced to rethink.
6. Numbers & Battle Scenarios
To understand the real impact of Knife Through Butter, we need to break down its mechanics with some simple math.
Every Immortal in Infinity Kingdom regenerates energy naturally through their base Energy Regen attribute. Once they reach 1,000 energy points, their ultimate skill is triggered. This is the universal threshold across the game. Knife Through Butter interferes with this cycle by draining energy before enemies can hit that 1,000 mark.
Here’s how the skill plays out in numbers:
- Knife Through Butter activates every 6 normal attacks from the Immortal holding it.
- With an attack speed of 3 attacks per second (achievable in hybrid builds with Wind Rage + Berserker), the skill cycles once every 2 seconds.
- That means 0.5 cycles per second.
- Each cycle has a 60% chance to trigger its energy drain, giving an average of 0.3 successful procs per second.
- Each successful proc removes 300 energy from every enemy Immortal.
- On average, that’s about 90 energy drained per second per enemy (300 × 0.3).
In practice, this translates to around 900 energy denied per enemy over 10 seconds of battle. Since 1,000 energy is the cast threshold, this often means an entire ultimate is erased from the rotation within the first cycle of combat.
I did not test the skill yet, (still to unlock) so to see the impact, take a look at two real battle reports shared by my colleague Fictions:
- In the left report (47 seconds) against Alexander equipped with Knife Through Butter, Loki managed only 7 ultimates.
- In the right report (41 seconds) against a team without the skill, Loki unleashed 13 ultimates, almost double in fewer seconds.
- Loki cast about 46% fewer ultimate when fighting vs Knife Through Butter

Source: Fictions article.
That’s the clearest sign of Knife’s disruptive power: it doesn’t just deal damage—it delays ultimates.
Of course, battles have many moving parts. Control effects, Wind Rage activation, and even confusion rates can influence the outcome. But as a general rule, if you’re facing Knife Through Butter, expect your Immortals to cast fewer ultimates over the course of a fight.
Mael’s Opinion: This skill feels like a turning point. Before, fights often came down to “whose team ults first and faster.” Now, with Knife Through Butter, you get a way to cut that chain reaction. I see it as one of the healthiest changes to the meta — it rewards speed and punishes regen stacking. Return of hybrids?
7. Counters to Knife Through Butter
Knife Through Butter is disruptive, but it isn’t without answers. Several strategies can soften its impact or bypass it entirely.
Energy recovery remains the most reliable option. Skills such as Energy Mastery, Rage Blessing, or Infinite Firepower can help rebuild what’s lost. By stacking these tools, teams can offset the -300 energy drain and still reach the 1000-point ultimate threshold at a steady pace.
Another approach is to focus on burst damage or attack speed reduction. Because Knife Through Butter only activates after six normal attacks, eliminating its user early can stop the drain before it snowballs. Targeting Immortals like Alexander, Ares, or Hannibal quickly prevents them from disrupting your rotation.
Finally, mirror matches are worth mentioning. When both teams run Knife Through Butter, chance plays a much larger role. Extra attack speed from Wind Rage, critical hits, or confusion effects can swing the balance toward whichever side procs more consistently. Fine-tuning artifacts and speed setups can be decisive in these duels.
Mael’s Opinion: Knife Through Butter is powerful, but not oppressive. What keeps it healthy is that counterplay exists. Personally, I find the most satisfying answer is smart team building: knowing when to stack recovery, when to rely on burst, and when to bring your own Knife for balance. It adds variety instead of locking players into one path.
8. Conclusion
Knife Through Butter isn’t about stacking raw damage. Its real strength lies in breaking the rhythm of battles. By slowing down ultimate chains, it forces players to adapt, rethink their energy management, and build around disruption instead of pure speed.
For PvP players, it feels like a breath of fresh air. Hyper-regen strategies no longer dominate without challenge, and hybrid compositions finally get room to shine.
In my opinion, this skill is one of the most important additions since a long time. It fills a long-missing gap in the game: meaningful energy control. While it comes with RNG elements and requires the right attacker setup, the payoff is worth it. If your goal is to win more PvP matches, Knife Through Butter deserves a permanent slot in your roster.
