🖼️ Priceless gem, marvelous collection... Wait, where did it go?! 🖼️

📕Story Background
Another day, Detective Poirot received an urgent call from his friend, Andrew.
“Please come at once,” Andrew pleaded. “A priceless gem of mine has been stolen, I need your help to recover it!”
Poirot soon arrived at Andrew’s grand estate and was led into a sealed circular room. He took in the scene with a quick glance. The room had no corners, just a smooth round wall.
To the left of the door stood a butler, beside a drinks table with five glasses containing ice and two bottles. In the center of the room was a small table, now empty except for an open jewelry box—clearly where the gem had been stored.
To the right of the door stood Mrs. Smith, admiring a Renoir painting. Next to her was Mr. Muller, observing a Picasso. Beside him stood Mr. Latt, absorbed in a Rembrandt painting. Finally, Andrew himself stood near Mr. Latt. No one else was present, and the room contained no hiding places.
“Mr. Poirot,” said Andrew, “I invited my guests to view my art collection. At first, we were all gathered here admiring my prized gem. Then they became interested in the paintings and stood up to look around. Where they stand now is exactly where they were when I discovered the gem was gone. As you can see, everyone was facing away from the gem. We were all too focused on the artwork to notice anything.”
Poirot asked calmly, “And the butler—what was he doing at the time?”
“I asked him to prepare drinks. He was mixing cocktails. I could hear the clinking of ice as he worked. I searched him thoroughly—he doesn’t have the gem. As for my guests, I can’t exactly frisk them—they’re all close friends. But no one has left the room.”
Poirot slowly scanned the space. The room was impeccably tidy, with no clear hiding spots. He stood in silence for a moment. Then, suddenly, his eyes gleamed. He had figured it out.
“The gem,” he said quietly, “has been here all along.”
How did Detective Poirot manage to find the gem? Where was the gem most likely hidden according to the clue?
(This story is absolutely fictional. Any inconsistencies with common sense work for the plot)
🔍Known Clues
- The room is circular with no corners or hiding places.
- The gem could not be on any of the guests or the butler after the search.

Correct Answer: Tuilp opened after Kin arrived
Tulips are sensitive to light. At night, their petals close in darkness and only reopen under bright light or direct sunlight. When Kindaichi entered, the tulips were closed—meaning the room had been dark. If Luban had truly been reading there for a while, the lights would have already caused the tulips to bloom. Their change during the conversation proved he had just turned on the lights moments before Kindaichi arrived.
