🔷 Introduction
Welcome to part 25 of my Wukong series.
We are following three famous fire immortals and their ally Wukong, who is currently training in the arts of fire. They have had a tough journey as of late, and their adventure is only going to get harder.
📄 Recap of Part 24: “The New Dawn Of Camelot”
After overthrowing King Arthur's tyrannical rule, Wukong reluctantly assumed the role of Camelot's steward, vowing to guide the kingdom without succumbing to the corruption of power. With the support of his companions, he worked tirelessly to rebuild and restore hope, embodying a leader driven by humility and resolve rather than ambition.
🔷 Part 25: “Guardians Resolve”
As the days in Camelot stretched into weeks, Wukong found himself navigating not just the expectations of the common people but the cunning machinations of the nobility. Though the kingdom's wounds were still fresh, the upper echelon had wasted no time in seeking his favor. One by one, they came to him, cloaked in velvet and gold, their intentions wrapped in veiled words and tempting offers.
The first to visit was Lord Drayton, a man whose presence was as rigid as his ideals. Bowing deeply, he presented Wukong with a chest overflowing with gold coins, their polished surfaces gleaming under the dim light of the throne room.
"Guardian," Drayton began, his voice sharp and precise, "Camelot's salvation lies in order—strict laws, firm discipline. The people must be reminded of their place. Allow me to advise you, and together we will build a kingdom where rebellion is but a distant memory."
Wukong listened silently, his golden eyes narrowing. Drayton's words carried the stench of tyranny, a reflection of Arthur's reign. When the lord finished, Wukong rose from his seat, his staff clinking against the stone floor.
"You speak of order, but what you offer is oppression," Wukong declared, his voice echoing through the hall. "The people of Camelot have fought and bled for freedom. I will not dishonor their sacrifice by chaining them anew."
Drayton’s face flushed, and before he could protest, Wukong gestured to the guards. "Take his gold, for the treasury serves the people, not ambition. As for you, Lord Drayton—leave this castle and do not return."
The second visitor, Lord Ambrose, arrived the following morning. His demeanor was softer, his words honeyed. Instead of gold, he offered scrolls detailing plans for reducing taxes, a move that would benefit the nobility far more than the common folk.
"Guardian," Ambrose said with a warm smile, "the people adore you, but burdens must be eased—for everyone, of course. A lighter hand in taxation will ensure their loyalty and prosperity."
Wukong leaned forward, resting his staff across his knees. "And by 'everyone,' you mean the wealthy, don’t you? While the poor scrape by, you would see your coffers grow fat."
Ambrose's smile faltered. "I only seek to ensure stability," he replied, but his voice lacked conviction.
Wukong stood, his expression stern. "True stability comes from fairness, not indulgence. Your greed blinds you to the suffering of those beneath you. Guards, take his plans for review and use them to craft laws that serve all equally. As for Lord Ambrose, he is no longer welcome here."
The final visitor, Lord Harrick, was the boldest of the three. He strode into the throne room with an air of entitlement, offering deeds to vast tracts of land in exchange for Wukong’s favor.
"Guardian, the kingdom needs strong leaders with resources to rebuild," Harrick said smugly. "Grant me the surrounding lands, and I will ensure Camelot flourishes under your reign."
Wukong's grip tightened on his staff. "You seek to carve up Camelot like a feast, hoarding power while the people starve."
Harrick smirked. "A necessary sacrifice for progress."
Wukong’s voice thundered in response. "You would sacrifice others to feed your ambition. Camelot has no place for men like you. Guards, take his deeds for redistribution to the people and remove him from my sight."
By the end of the day, the nobles’ schemes had been laid bare, their tributes repurposed for the kingdom’s recovery. Alone in the vast hall, Wukong sighed, the weight of leadership pressing upon him. Yet, he remained resolute.
"As long as I stand here, no gold, no whispers, and no promise of power will sway me. I am not a ruler—I am their guardian."
📄 Recap Questions
To what end will Wukong and friends be guardians over the seemingly corrupted lands of Camelot?
Will any of our beloved heroes give in to the greed and corruption that breeds from these lands, or will they stay strong and hold each other accountable?
🔷 Conclusion
Camelot is in much better hands than it has ever been in. A warrior with seemingly no motive or reason to choose dramatic choices has taken over. Wukong is unwavering in his decisions and has already led the city into a much more stable place than it has ever been in.
See you next week!
