💠Introduction

What’s up, folks? Welcome back to my Illusion Battlefield(IB) series where I take a closer look at different matches. IB is different from the IB League tournament in that you will use your normal teams, skill sets, talents, and decoration skins so strength is extremely relevant. The mode is also much slower-paced. Relocations and marching speed are slower. The event is one of the most entertaining events in Infinity Kingdom that players enjoy spectating, almost like a sporting event. In this article, I’m going to take a closer look at the match between Server 38’s Celestial Plains(SSQ) and Server 205’s Knights of Gondor(GoN). SSQ’s positions in this match will be denoted in yellow while GoN’s will be in red.

💠Overview

SSQ and GoN are both the product of merging two alliances from their respective servers. AoW merged into SSQ and Lion merged into GoN for the sake of KvK. AoW and SSQ are both extremely good IB/L teams that have made the IBL finals multiple times and claimed a win in the first season. They also have the firepower to back it up. Lion and GoN, on the other hand, have always been fairly good at IB/L but they lack the strength and coordination that the teams from Server 38 have. SSQ should have the upper hand in this match due to their experience and personnel differences.

💠Starting Positions and Talents

SSQ

  • Started with 37 players and ended with 40
  • 10 Attack talents
  • 24 Defense talents
  • 3 Support talents

GoN

  • Started with 30 players and ended with 34
  • 12 Attack talents
  • 18 Defense talents
  • 0 Support talents

💠Tower 1

SSQ relocated seven players to Tower 1 while GoN relocated eight. Both teams contested the corner spot on the bottom right corner of the tower. Both teams also had three players adjacent to the tower and there were small gaps between the players. The situation is similar for both sides and it would come down to who can get the strongest player to finish relocating.

💠Tower 4

SSQ overloaded Tower 4 with 19 players with one player overlapping two others and GoN had 10 with one overlap. SSQ knew they had an advantage on Tower 4 so they also moved to block relocations on GoN’s side of the map. I thought this was an over-commitment with so many players having edge spawns. SSQ could have been more aggressive with their relocations and then sent more players to the center or Tower 1. GoN’s relocations left a lot to be desired. Some are too close to the tower and some are too far away.

💠Central Tower

SSQ sent nine players to the center and GoN sent six. Two SSQ players moved to GoN’s side of the map. Teams typically send the players further inside the spawn to the center because it’s difficult to break relocations when the tower is so large. GoN could have given up Tower 4 knowing they were going to get blocked and gone to the center instead.

💠Altars

GoN sent two players to the Sun Altar and SSQ didn’t send anyone to the Moon Altar.

💠Home Towers

Both teams had two guards at their respective home towers.

💠Play-By-Play

At Tower 1, GoN blocked a relocation and destroyed two others. SSQ also destroyed two relocations. Several GoN members’ relocations were particularly late, likely due to them not using the fast relocation lord talent. Despite being slightly further away from the tower, SSQ had stronger players. They nearly captured the tower when GoN thwarted the attempt at the last second. SSQ proceeded to zero a couple of players and then successfully captured the tower on their second try halfway to seven minutes. SSQ zeroed the rest of the GoN players and surrounded the tower effortlessly.

At Tower 4, SSQ blocked one relocation and destroyed two. Several GoN players were late with their relocations at this tower as well. With only five GoN players at the tower, SSQ focused and zeroed them with minimal effort while capturing the tower at the same time. SSQ then turned their sights toward the center and multiple players started relocating.

In the center, the two SSQ relocations that were invading GoN’s side of the territory were canceled and destroyed. Both teams were fairly even. GoN started sending reinforcements from its spawn and SSQ sent reinforcements from Tower 4. By 20 minutes, neither team was victorious and both had committed about a third of their team. In the meantime, SSQ had created a 16,000-point lead from controlling Towers 1 and 4.

Meanwhile, at 18 minutes, one SSQ player sneakily used the altar and invaded GoN’s home tower. The guards were too far away to destroy the relocation and were too weak to stop the invasion. SSQ nearly captured the tower when a few more teleported in to assist and secure the tower. GoN tried to respond but they were a few minutes too late. SSQ controlled all four side towers and was slowly creating a rift that was becoming increasingly harder to overcome.

In response, GoN teleported players to SSQ’s home tower, zeroed a couple of the guards and successfully captured the tower. Unfortunately, by 30 minutes, SSQ already had a 30,000-point lead, a gap that was too large to overcome within 30 minutes. They would need to retake at least four towers. With so many players committed to the center already to no avail, there was just no way for them to pull off the miracle. GoN did briefly recapture Tower 4 before losing it again. SSQ also retook their home tower, making things impossible for GoN.

💠Summary

SSQ’s Lenser was the match MVP as they won the match with 100,000 points to GoN’s 31,900. GoN needs to do better at swapping Lord Talents so they can relocate faster, especially since swaps are free. Had they reached their destinations earlier, they could have fared significantly better at Tower 1. GoN could have considered giving up Tower 4 in favor of Tower 1 instead, especially since they had fewer players. I want to see more red teams consider doing that when they can’t summon all their members to play. SSQ made good rotations but was largely unchallenged except in the center.
